When it comes to home decor, Nashville’s rich history and deep musical roots offer plenty of interesting inspiration—but it can still be tough to get started. Whether you’re styling a luxury townhome in East Nashville or a cozy space in North Nashville, the key to achieving your dream space lies in understanding your aesthetic preferences and following a strategic approach to decorating. Check out these five steps from Harpeth Valley Homes to help you get started!
Start With a Good De-clutter

If you’re anything like most homeowners, you have likely accumulated some clutter over the years. Take inventory from time to time—step back and look at your space with fresh eyes, and then remove any extra pieces that just don’t fit your décor scheme. It helps to have ‘inspiration’ photos or a mood board that you want to stick to—and then don’t deviate from that. How to hone in on your preferred style? We’ve got the answers.
Hone in on Your Décor Style

When trying to narrow down your preferred style or theme, Pinterest is a great place to start. You can use Pinterest to collect any photos of rooms that inspire you or make you feel something. Once you’ve gathered about a dozen photos, start to look for patterns. You can ask yourself questions like, “Do I gravitate toward simple/clean lines or do I like a more maximalist look?” or “Do I tend to pin rooms that have lots of color, or do I choose rooms that are more neutral in color palette?” and then use those discoveries to learn more about your own preferences.
Prune Any Outlying Pieces
Once you have a better idea of what you truly like the best, start to look at your space, identify elements that don’t fit within that style, and remove items that don’t work. We all have pieces that we’ve acquired ‘on accident’ or ‘by chance.’ Sometimes those random items work within our style—other times, they’re just there out of convenience. Make an effort to curate furniture and accessories that fit your style, and don’t be afraid to get rid of items that don’t work.
Bring Your Inspo Along for the Ride

When shopping for new items for your home, be it furniture or accessories, bring along your inspiration photos! It is really helpful to refer back to a mood board to help you stay on track and choose items that don’t just appeal to you in the moment. Stay the course and you’ll be happier with the end result!
Start (Color) Scheming
Your chosen color palette forms the base for all decorations in a room. Determine whether your color scheme preference is on the warmer or cooler side, and choose accent colors that go along with that. Paint can be a real challenge for many people, as it will vary depending on the lighting in the room. A good rule of thumb is to look at the WHOLE paint card for clues on what colors the paint might cast off in different lighting. For example: if the paint color you like has other deeper colors on the card that lean toward yellow…then yellow is going to be a dominant color in that paint. You can also use the surrounding cards in this way, as if you are in a section of paint cards (on a paint deck) that have blue, for example…the color you’re focusing on probably will cast off a blue hue.
